The cracks in the the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State appear to be widening by the day.
Governor Willie Obiano has initiated moves to break the ranks of the National Working Committee (NWC) of APGA as part of his desperate schemes to secure the party’s elusive ticket for the 2017 governorship election.
Report from AUTHORITY newspaper said members of the NWC who revolted against the embattled National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Oye, are being wooed with millions of naira by the governor.
Oye is a core supporter of Obiano but the NWC members, at their recent meeting in Abuja, sacked the APGA chief over alleged breach of the party’s constitution.
For peace to return, the NWC members gave Obiano, who is the APGA leader, the freehand to appoint anyone outside Oye as the party’s chairman.
But the governor, who is relying on Oye to get his re-election ticket, has reportedly refused to toe the line of the NWC.
The state government’s alleged plot to induce the NWC members with money is reportedly being executed by two top aides of the governor, who have collected the bank details of the APGA leaders.
It was learnt that APGA’s Acting National Chairman, Ozo Nwabueze Mario Okafor, has snubbed the aides, insisting on the removal of Oye.
After Obiano’s intervention in the removal of Oye, the NWC members had agreed that nobody should address the press on the matter but the embattled chairman violated the terms of the truce, when in a media interview, he lambasted them for moving against him.
That angered Okafor and other NWC members who have insisted that Oye must go or Obiano should forget his second term bid.
Obiano has mobilised to divide the NWC against Okafor so that Oye would remain in office.
Only at the weekend, Oye appealed to party faithful at the grassroots as well as members of the NWC and Board of Trustees (BoT) to forgive his misgivings in the interests of the Igbo party.
Oye, who made the plea at the Rojenny Games Village and the Ogirisi Igbo Spiritual Centre, Oba, Anambra State, in the presence of party faithful, noted that peace, love, mutual forgiveness and stability alone could salvage APGA, even as the party plans to retain its dominance and leadership in Anambra and beyond.
The APGA boss, who visited Oba for a scheduled meeting with Ogirisi Igbo and some party stakeholders, said: “What we need in APGA is brotherly love, not conflict. Those who know me very well will attest that I am born to serve; not to rule, suppress or dominate others. This is why I have not made attempts to run for any elective position in the 35 years that I have been in active politics.
“I have the humility to serve; I do not live a false life. In APGA, we cannot make meaningful progress if we fail to forgive ourselves of our individual shortcomings.
“What joins us is our dear party, APGA. I wish to extend the olive branch to all APGA members, including BoT members, as well as the NWC, and all supporters of our dear party. In whatever way that I have offended them, please, forgive; so that together we can build a formidable APGA,” he said.
Earlier, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, (Ogirisi Igbo), who is the proprietor of Rojenny Games Village and a member of APGA’s BoT, told party faithful that Oye was at his country home because of the crisis rocking the party.
