Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that he will not be a part of the planned police probe of the December 10 State and National Assembly rerun elections in the state.
Wike said that it was tragic that the police who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) to kill the people of the state to say that they were going to investigate the incident.
According to report by BreakingTimes, Wike on Sunday, stated this at the thanksgiving mass of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Our Lady Chaplaincy of Catholic Institute of West Africa in Port Harcourt to mark the party’s victory in the election.
He said that the outcome of the police probe of the rerun election had been determined: to indict the PDP and begin a politically-motivated prosecution of the party members and officials of his administration.
After the election and following the alleged leak of a video linking Wike to the violence in the state during the election, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, had hinted that a probe panel had been set up to investigate developments before and during the polls.
He said that the police would also probe the alleged threatening of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Wike.
Wike said: “The police cannot deliberately murder Rivers people in cold blood and turn around to investigate. We are not a party to their so-called panel. We have passed that stage and we cannot fall into the trap of a panel of inquiry. After killing our people, you want us to assist you unravel what? It is the police that killed our people.”
The governor expressed shock over the police decision to investigate issues surrounding the Rivers elections when “it is an interested party. The police were involved in the attempt to subvert the will of the people,” he stated
According to him, the same Police High Command which refused to prosecute the APC leaders caught on camera printing fake result sheets ahead of the elections had suddenly woken up to probe the election they helped the opposition party to rig.
He lamented that the petitions written to the Police High Command on the excesses of ACP Steven Hasso and the Commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Mr. Akin Fakorede, were ignored.
